TIDE Bilingual Immigration Staff Attorney

TLC’s Trans Immigrant Defense Effort (TIDE) was created as an emergency response to the current administration.   • trains pro bono attorneys across the country on how to best represent TGNC immigrants, including in affirmative asylum petitions, citizenship applications and areas of removal defense;
  • provides mentoring and technical assistance to pro bono attorneys who represent TGNC immigrants; and
  • collaborates with grassroots LGBT immigrant rights groups to develop a community-led deportation defense model that places directly impacted community members at the center of their own defense and advocacy.

  • Conduct preliminary intake interviews with TGNC immigrants in English and Spanish.
  • Provide immigration-related legal counseling to TGNC immigrants related to immigration relief, including but not limited to: removal defense; asylum; withholding of removal; relief under the Convention Against Torture; adjustment of status; T, U, VAWA, SIJS relief; and name and gender changes for immigration documents.
  • Conduct legal research and draft high quality legal briefs and memoranda, as necessary.
  • Support recruitment and training pro bono attorneys on areas of immigration relief and cultural competence in representing TGNC immigrants.
  • Support matching TGNC immigrants with pro bono attorneys who will provide representation.
  • Maintain and organize project’s data and produce reports.
  • Remain current on immigration law, policies, and procedures, as well as the implications of criminal law as it applies to the representation of TGNC immigrants.

  • Law degree and 1 -3 years’ experience practicing immigration law that prepares the applicant for the responsibilities of the position.
  • Membership in the bar of at least one state.
  • Spanish fluency (written and spoken).
  • Solid knowledge of current TGNC immigration legal issues.

  • Demonstrated history of producing the highest caliber legal work.
